Little Known Facts about a Great Town - Seaside Heights

  • With water on both sides of Seaside Heights, life saving stations are always an important resource for boaters and bathers.  According to Pauline S. Miller's book 'Ocean County - Four Centuries in the Making' the "Toms River Life Saving Station No. 13 was authorized in 1854 near the south side of the old Cranberry Inlet (present day Seaside Heights)."
  • The old wooden bridge that spanned Island Heights with Seaside Heights never had a formal name and was only referred to as "the wooden toll bridge."

  • As far back as 1909, Manhasset Realty Company planned a "section  of Seaside Heights as a beach resort and began selling lots to Philadelphia and Camden city dwellers" Miller's book reports.
  • Four years passed for the "first three blocks of the Seaside boardwalk to be completed", says Miller.
  • The population of Seaside Heights was 399 in 1930 and is now close to 3,000.

Part One - From California to the beaches of New Jersey - the story behind One Ocean Boulevard

Part One of a Two Part Series:
The Story of One Ocean Boulevard

It's interesting to hear the story of how a place, a time and a love of surfing evolved into creating the landmark building, One Ocean Boulevard. This unique building in Seaside Heights, New Jersey has the persona and the style of two of the east and west coast's popular resort empires.

So, it's not surprising to learn that John Hale, one of the partners of One Ocean Boulevard, LLC was born in Coronado, California, in close proximity to the Hotel del Coronado with its white façade topped with its blazing red roof.

Even so, when John's family moved to Connecticut, he brought with him a love of Spanish influenced architecture and his passion for the surfing life.

Photo courtesy of Hotel del Coronado

But it's hard if not impossible to surf along the shores of Long Island Sound. Luckily for John, his family moved close to one of the best surfing spots at the Jersey Shore in Seaside Heights. John says that "I spent many enjoyable days at the beach, body surfing and riding waves on canvas surf mats. Had my first experience riding a surfboard when I was 12 and surfing instantly became a passion."

Many say that the 1960's was the zenith of the classic long board era. John remembers that "The highlight of the summer was having a bird’s eye view of the East Coast Surfing Championships that were held by Casino Pier, directly in front of the arcade I worked in.." and that "this contest drew the best surfers from around the world directly to Seaside Heights to compete. There were ground swell conditions and off-shore winds for the entire contest that lasted for several days."

You would think that ideal conditions for surfing were only found in California. But John remarks, "Here in New Jersey the conditions were perfect for classic long board hot-dogging: chest-to-shoulder high, clean and glassy, razor-edge waves.

It was incredible to witness this event from such a close vantage point and watch the iconic surfers, whom I had seen in magazines demonstrate their mastery of the art of classic long board surfing; trimming, stalling, drop-knee turning, walking, and nose riding. Needless to say, this produced a high level of stoke for all!

During his teens and twenties, John enjoyed summer and the surfing life at Seaside Heights. Like so many past and present residents of the area, John spent his time as a lifeguard and worked at the amusement rides.

Forty years later, John's life was firmly entrenched in family, work and life in the Jersey Shore. Yet, the influence of California's beaches, its architecture and then a visit to Disney's Grande Floridian Hotel eventually led to the concept and then the beginning of the landmark condominium, One Ocean Boulevard.

The story continues in Part Two...

From Newark To The Casino Pier Pool - The Story Behind A Landmark Condominium

Casino Pier Pool -Saltwater Pool in Seaside Heights, NJ

Once upon a time in the city of Newark, there were many families of Italian or Irish descent who raised their families and spent summer weekends at the Jersey Shore. One of those Italian descendants is James Anzano, now a partner with John N. Hale of One Ocean Boulevard - Seaside Heights’ newest condominium.

As a child, James enjoyed hours of fun at the beach, boardwalk and the Casino Pier Pool in Seaside Heights. Little did he know at that time, that he would return blocks away from his favorite place in Seaside Heights to build a landmark condominium.

Yet, it wasn’t till after college that James returned to the barrier islands. First, he completed his degree in Economics and Accounting at Rutgers. By 23 years old, he earned a CPA and soon after completed his Master’s in Business Administration from the NYU Stern School of Business. After travels in Europe and Asia and his business interest in a manufacturing company, James settled in Ocean County close to the beaches of his youth.

After completing his studies, James and his wife, Linda and young family began to enjoy summers at the shore, an important part of their life. James remarks that “Basically, our family loves the beaches at the Jersey Shore!”

Fun at the beach of Seaside Heights, NJ

By 2007, James and business partner, John N. Hale, returned to the place they both loved as children to begin the construction project for One Ocean Boulevard. However, James says that in retrospect, buying the land for the project was “…not the best of timing” considering the state of the economy.

Then Super Storm Sandy hit the barrier islands, which caused delays to the construction schedule of One Ocean Boulevard. But, James says despite the delays caused by Sandy, the project continued and is now ready for its Grand Opening this year. James remarks that because of his years growing up in a hard-working family and through “hard work and perseverance, we were able to maintain the investment through difficult years.”

Life has evolved full circle for James Anzano with the Grand Opening of One Ocean Boulevard. Today, James Anzano’s view and outlook for Seaside Heights remains as promising and exciting as his trips to the Jersey Shore as a child.

The Top Three Reasons to Go Condo This Year at the Jersey Shore

1. If you're like most New Jerseyians and New Yorkers, you like the idea of being close to our famous beaches.

Besides the sand and surf, we have miles of boardwalks, waterparks, fishing, and boating. Throughout the year, (not just in summer) you can enjoy towns like Seaside Heights, Seaside Park or nearby Island Beach State Park. You may be ready for a new start, a new life. You want more time to enjoy life and you want to spend less time on maintaining your home.

2. Our shoreline is unparalleled on the east coast and we know it!
Like many of your friends, you research websites like Trulia to look for that special place to go to on the weekends. Or, maybe you're a 'Snow Bird' and you return every year to our beaches, your family and friends and to the memories you have of the Shore. Perhaps you fall into the 'Millennial' age group like one of our new homeowners. Lately, you and your friends have been discussing ways to invest in home ownership, but without the cost and drudgery of single family home maintenance.

3. You want to enjoy this summer without the hassle of renovating or building!

Whether young or older (yet feeling young), you might want to look into condo ownership this year. In a recent article in the New York Times about the New York City condo market, Stephen Kleigerman said "Everybody is designing to a very high level...". So too in New Jersey, the focus on building exemplary condominiums is also paramount as seen in One Ocean Boulevard, Seaside Heights' newest condominium. Just driving up to this new condominium, is a treat for the eyes with its white facade, ornate railings and memorable red shingle roof.

Balcony Views and Light Filled Rooms
Besides its beautiful maintenance free exterior setting, One Ocean Boulevard is ready for move-in day. The interior of each unit is designed with an open floorplan to encourage an easier, more relaxed lifestyle. By the time you are ready to pack your sandals, you can start to live by the beach, close to friends or family and all that our shoreline has to offer. No need to invest in renovating or restoring or removing old wallpaper - our walls are ready for your family photos. You'll rest easy, now that you have time to watch your favorite TV programs, instead of spending time with renovations.

Another great bonus (for a limited lucky few) is the chance to benefit from the interest only financing that is available to the first 7 qualified buyers.* Also, even though there are only 15 units, there is a price point for everyone. Each unit and every amenity at the condominium is designed for you - today's home buyer - people like you who want the best value, the best open plan floorplan and the easiest to maintain new condominium home

Sand, surf, seasons at the Shore. What are you waiting for?

Part III of a Five Part Series - Little Known Facts About Seaside Heights, New Jersey

100 Years of traveling over the Bridge and around the Carousel in Seaside Heights, New Jersey

It was in 1914 that the first bridge allowed homeowners and vacationers to travel from the mainland of Toms River to Seaside Heights. Yet, in the book "The First Fifty", the author remarks that the first wooden bridge was "uncomfortable to ride over, costly to maintain and far too narrow to handle the growing vehicle traffic."

But, it took forty years later and at a cost of $6,000,000 for the long span of the Thomas A. Mathis bridge to cure the pain of crowds waiting in their cars to cross the bridge to Seaside Heights. Once the vacationers arrived, they were ready to enjoy the many attractions such as the Carousel.

The Famous Dentzel Carousel compliments of Seaside Heights

As noted in the Discover Seaside Heights website - http://www.discoverseasideheights.com/history/boardwalk-history:

One of the carousels "was brought from Burlington to Seaside Heights in 1932. It was placed in an open frame building and was still under the care and management of Linus Gilbert. This first building was the beginnings of what would later become the Casino Arcade and Casino Pier. When the carousel building was first built there was a fishing pier located a short distance away."

"The pier then had nothing to do with what was soon to become a growing amusement area. Eventually the "Seaside Heights Casino” was built to house the carousel and to add more attractions around it. This same building is still in place today. The most recent large scale change to the structure took place in the 1980's. The building was made smaller to keep it from blocking Ocean Boulevard, which is the main street paralleling the western side of the boardwalk."

While the old problem of transporting homeowners and vacationers is now resolved with six lanes for traffic, the plight of the famous carousel has had its ups and downs (no pun intended!). For awhile, it was feared that the carousel would be auctioned off and the town would lose an important part of its history. However, the present owners of the carousel will "convey the carousel to the Borough of Seaside Heights as part of the owners’ broader expansion plans for the Casino Pier", according to their website page.

For another round of summer, the carousel will continue to bring smiles to the faces of its residents and vacationers. After this summer though, it is expected that the carousel will be moved to another location in Seaside Heights. So, while seasons come and go, the good news is that the carousel will be around for many years to come.

Please return to read Part IV of our five part series! We would love to hear your memories of the bridges of Seaside Heights and the carousel.

Part II of a Five Part Series - Little Known Facts About Seaside Heights, New Jersey

Bridges to and from Seaside Heights, NJ

Yesterday, the St. Patrick's Day parade in Seaside Heights celebrated the Irish heritage of its current or former residents and visitors to this seaside community. After the parade, many travelled over the bridge named for one of its past residents, who was also a man of Irish heritage - J. Stanley Tunney.

It's not surprising to find out that Tunney was a mayor of Seaside Heights. But before he entered the political scene, we discovered a few interesting facts about J. Stanley Tunney from the book "The First Fifty - A Biographical History of Seaside Heights, New Jersey."

One of his first jobs was in real estate but he "felt like a caged lion" in the business. Then, he and his wife, Louise opened a hardware store which eventually failed. It took twelve years for Tunney to pay back his creditors.

  • A trip to Seaside Heights in 1924 marked the beginning of his determination to "be his own boss and to provide for his six children."

  • The Tunney family opened a food shack on a pier which was washed out a number of times.

  • In the winter, Tunney scoured the beaches for jewelry and goods left from summer beachgoers to help provide money to feed his family. One day, Tunney found a barrel on the beach filled with whisky. He sold the barrel for $300. Tunney remarked that after this discovery ... "everything seemed to go all right."

  • Years after the food shack, the family opened a restaurant and then "branched out into the amusement business."
Yes it's true that J. Stanley Tunney was not the only resident that believed in the potential and real estate value of Seaside Heights. Yet his story is remarkable for his determination, persistence and success in developing one of the most visited seaside towns on the east coast - Seaside Heights, New Jersey.

Part I of a Five Part Series - What Everyone Ought to Know about Seaside Heights, New Jersey

Little Known Facts About Seaside Heights, New Jersey

You're probably reading this post for one or all of the reasons below:

  • You live near Seaside Heights
  • You grew up or vacationed in Seaside Heights as a child
  • You enjoy the summer beaches, boardwalk and events in Seaside
  • You're researching Seaside Heights before you buy a home at the Jersey Shore
  • You sat next to Frank Baer, Jr. who inspired you or us to write about the great history of Seaside Park last weekend

With the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade scheduled for next Saturday, March 7 at noon, it's a great time to look back at the history of Seaside Heights. For instance, many of us only heard of the train that stopped to bring vacationers to the beaches over 100 years ago.

You can just about imagine how the passengers felt when they finally arrived and jumped off the train to cool off at the beach. The only thing that hasn't changed in all these years is the beautiful view of the ocean, the sound of the waves and the joy of relaxing at this Seaside town.

Read below the story of the train to the beaches of Seaside Park courtesy of SeasideHeights.org -

"Almost anyone living in the New Jersey, New York or Philadelphia areas has a recollection or memory of one of the most historic seaside towns in the northeast. Some of the memories go back to days when a train station brought year-round visitors to enjoy the beach, boardwalk and amusement rides. A railroad bridge was built that stretched across the Barnegat Bay landing on the island in South Seaside Park."

"Part of the old railroad bridge exists today and is a pier used for crabbing and fishing. The Railroad made its first run through Seaside July 4th, 1881 and a railroad station was built in 1882.  Later in the early 1900s this railroad eventually extended and followed what is now Central Avenue into then incorporated Seaside Heights . There was a train station near Sumner Avenue and it made its way down central avenue in Seaside Heights past the Barnegat Cold Storage between Grant and Sherman Avenues making its way north through Ortley Beach, Bay Head and Point Pleasant."

Since this is a monumental year for us at One Ocean Boulevard, Seaside Heights landmark condominium, we wanted to share our love of this town our future residents will call home.

Please return to read Part II of a Five Part Series -  Little Known Facts About Seaside Heights, New Jersey.

By the way, we would love to hear your stories and memories of your happiest times as a child in Seaside Heights.
